Franz Welser-Möst — the Vienna State Opera's former music director and one of the leading Berg interpreters alive — conducts Simon Stone's searing contemporary production, which relocates the action to present-day Vienna: a subway station, an employment office, the margins of society where people fall through the cracks. This is theatre at its most raw and powerful.

German baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle delivers a devastating portrayal of the exploited soldier Wozzeck, alongside Marlis Petersen as Marie, Dmitry Belosselskiy as the Doctor, and Dmitry Golovnin as the Drum Major. Berg's ninety-minute masterpiece (1925) is one of the most powerful operas ever written — a shattering cry against injustice, poverty, and the dehumanization of the powerless. Not easy, but unforgettable.
