Wiener Staatsoper: the heart of musical Vienna
Since it opened in 1869 with Mozart's Don Giovanni, the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) has stood at the very centre of Vienna's musical life. The first of the grand public buildings on the Ringstrasse, its neo-Renaissance façade and gilded, tiered auditorium make it one of the most recognisable opera houses in the world. Badly damaged in 1945 and lovingly rebuilt, it reopened in 1955 as a symbol of the city's post-war revival.
What sets the house apart is its orchestra: the musicians of the Vienna State Opera also form the legendary Vienna Philharmonic, giving performances here a sound found almost nowhere else. With one of the busiest schedules in opera — hundreds of performances across dozens of works each season — plus a world-famous ballet company and the glittering annual Opera Ball, the Staatsoper keeps Vienna's centuries-old reputation as the capital of classical music vividly alive.
What to expect
Expect grand opera and ballet at the highest level, sung by international stars with the Vienna Philharmonic in the pit, in a house built for the voice. Arrive a little early to take in the marble staircase, the tea salon and the sense of true occasion; the atmosphere on the Ring, moments from the Hofburg and Kärntner Strasse, is part of the night.
