Why see Don Giovanni at the Vienna State Opera
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni (1787) is one of opera's supreme achievements — a dramma giocoso that fuses comedy, seduction and the supernatural. It follows the charismatic libertine Don Giovanni through a whirlwind of conquests and betrayals until the murdered Commendatore returns as a stone statue, dragging the unrepentant seducer down to damnation in one of the most electrifying finales ever composed. The score moves from playful serenades and Leporello's famous "Catalogue Aria" to music of genuine terror, and has fascinated audiences and composers alike for more than two centuries.
The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's great opera houses. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse and rebuilt after the Second World War, it stands at the heart of a city synonymous with music and remains home to a company with an unrivalled Mozart tradition. Its opulent auditorium, near-nightly repertoire and roll-call of legendary conductors and singers make it a landmark of European cultural life and a fitting setting for Mozart's masterpiece.
What to expect
- Mozart's dark comedy of seduction and reckoning, sung in Italian in a landmark European opera house
- The magnetic anti-hero Don Giovanni set against Leporello's witty, world-weary servant and the famous "Catalogue Aria"
- A score that swings from flirtatious serenades and ballroom dances to the thunderous arrival of the Stone Guest
- The spine-tingling supernatural finale, one of the most celebrated closing scenes in all of opera
- The grandeur and unmistakable atmosphere of a night at the Wiener Staatsoper on Vienna's Ringstrasse
Getting to the Wiener Staatsoper
The Wiener Staatsoper stands on the Opernring at the edge of Vienna's historic centre (Innere Stadt), Austria. It sits directly above Karlsplatz U-Bahn station, served by metro lines U1, U2 and U4, and is flanked by the Wien Oper tram and bus stops on the Ringstrasse (trams 1, 2, 71 and D). From the main rail hub at Wien Hauptbahnhof it is a short ride on public transport, and the house is an easy walk from Stephansplatz, the Hofburg and Kärntner Straße in the pedestrian old town.
