Why see The Barber of Seville at the Vienna State Opera
Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia) is one of the most beloved comic operas ever written. First staged in Rome in 1816 and drawn from Beaumarchais' celebrated play, this two-act opera buffa follows the quick-witted barber Figaro as he helps Count Almaviva win the hand of the spirited Rosina, right under the nose of her scheming guardian, Dr. Bartolo. Its whirlwind overture and Figaro's showstopping entrance aria, "Largo al factotum," rank among the most instantly recognisable music in all of opera.
The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's foremost opera houses and a defining landmark of Austria's capital. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse and lovingly rebuilt after the Second World War, the neo-Renaissance house stages around 350 performances across a season and draws its orchestra from the ranks of the legendary Vienna Philharmonic. To hear Rossini's bel canto masterpiece under its gilded ceiling is to experience Italian comic opera at the very heart of Vienna's musical tradition.
What to expect
- Rossini's exhilarating overture and the irresistible tongue-twisting patter of 'Largo al factotum'
- A fast-paced comedy of disguises, serenades and mistaken identities brought vividly to life
- Virtuosic bel canto singing that has made this score a benchmark for the world's great opera voices
- The warm acoustic and neo-Renaissance grandeur of one of Europe's most storied opera houses
- An evening of Italian comic opera performed at the very heart of Vienna's musical tradition
