The Theatre

A Stage Built for Puccini

The story of the Puccini Festival begins in 1930, when the composer's operas were first performed outdoors on the shores of the lake he loved so dearly. For decades the performances took place in temporary structures, until the decisive turning point: in 2008, marking the 150th anniversary of Puccini's birth, the new Gran Teatro all'aperto Giacomo Puccini was inaugurated, designed by architect Italo Insolera.

The €17 million complex occupies 7,500 square metres within the Parco della Musica e della Scultura, a 20-hectare park that also houses works by Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda. The main arena seats 3,370 spectators in a modern structure of concrete, wood and glass, while an underground auditorium provides a further 400 seats for chamber concerts and recitals.

The inauguration took place on 15 June 2008 with a concert conducted by Riccardo Chailly leading the Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala — a historic event that sealed the indissoluble bond between this place and the highest tradition of Italian music. Every summer since, from July to September, the theatre hosts the Puccini Festival: Italy's most important open-air opera festival, featuring the composer's greatest works alongside international galas, concerts and dance performances.

There is a place where opera is not merely performed — it is returned to its homeland. The Gran Teatro all'aperto Giacomo Puccini stands on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, steps from the villa where the composer wrote the most celebrated pages in the history of opera. Here, beneath the Tuscan sky, Turandot, Tosca, La Bohème and Madama Butterfly are not shows — they are a homecoming.
