Wagner's first mature opera (1843) tells the story of a ghostly sea captain condemned to sail the oceans for eternity, who may only be redeemed by a woman's unconditional love. The score captures the fury of the sea, the supernatural terror of the ghost ship, and the transcendent power of Senta's sacrifice with elemental force. From the thundering Overture to Senta's Ballad and the redemptive finale, this is Wagner at his most viscerally exciting — performed without interval in a single, overwhelming sweep.
