The visionary Belgian theatre-maker Jan Lauwers — renowned for his work with Needcompany — brings his unique fusion of music, dance, video, and image to Mozart's opera seria. Lauwers avoids simple good-versus-evil stereotypes, instead presenting complex characters with real emotional landscapes. Pablo Heras-Casado, one of the most sought-after conductors in the world, leads from the pit.

The sensational Canadian mezzo Emily D'Angelo stars as Sesto — the conflicted friend who conspires against the merciful Emperor Tito, sung by South African tenor Katleho Mokhoabane. Hanna-Elisabeth Müller is the scheming Vitellia, and Florina Ilie sings Servilia. Mozart's final opera seria (1791, composed alongside Die Zauberflöte) is a profound meditation on forgiveness, power, and the courage to show mercy — music of crystalline beauty and deeply human emotion.
