Rudolf Nureyev’s Swan Lake at the Vienna State Opera
Rudolf Nureyev created his Viennese production of Swan Lake in 1964, drawing on the classical traditions established by Petipa and Ivanov in their landmark 1895 staging.
While earlier interpretations placed particular emphasis on Odette, the Swan Queen, Nureyev gave Prince Siegfried a more central and psychologically complex role. His choreography demands exceptional technical precision while exploring the prince’s conflicting emotions, desires and growing sense of isolation.
The production entered ballet history on 15 October 1964, when Nureyev performed alongside Margot Fonteyn at the Vienna State Opera. Their premiere received an extraordinary 89 curtain calls, a Guinness World Record for a ballet performance.
More than six decades later, Nureyev’s choreography continues to occupy a special place in the Vienna State Ballet’s repertoire, with successive generations of dancers interpreting its demanding roles.
The Story of Swan Lake
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake follows Prince Siegfried, whose encounter with the mysterious Odette changes the course of his life.
Odette is a princess imprisoned by the sorcerer Rothbart, condemned to live as a swan except during the night. Siegfried falls in love with her and promises eternal fidelity, believing that his devotion can break the spell.
However, Rothbart deceives the prince by introducing Odile, a mysterious woman whose resemblance to Odette leads Siegfried into a devastating mistake.
The contrasting characters of Odette and Odile provide some of classical ballet’s most demanding dramatic and technical challenges. Nureyev’s interpretation adds another dimension by examining the prince’s inner world and the consequences of his choices.
Tchaikovsky’s music is equally important to the storytelling. Elegant courtly dances and lively waltzes contrast with the haunting melodies and darker orchestral passages associated with the enchanted lake.
