The Bartered Bride — Smetana at the Vienna State Opera
Dirk Schmeding makes his Vienna State Opera debut with this new staging of Smetana's national Czech masterpiece — the most joyous, tuneful, and irresistibly entertaining comic opera in the Slavic repertoire. Tomáš Hanus, a leading authority on Czech opera, conducts with idiomatic flair.
Slovak soprano Slávka Zámečníková stars as Mařenka alongside the great Slovak tenor Pavol Breslik as Jeník, with Michael Laurenz as the simpleton Vašek and Peter Kellner as the scheming marriage broker Kecal. The young lovers must outwit the scheming broker in a plot that culminates in one of the most delightful twists in all opera. Smetana's dazzling Overture, the energetic polkas, and the tender love duets make this one of the most uplifting evenings in the opera house.
