Puccini’s final opera
Turandot occupies a distinctive place in Giacomo Puccini’s catalogue. The composer died in 1924 before completing the score, leaving the final scenes unfinished. The version presented in Claus Guth’s Wiener Staatsoper production uses Franco Alfano’s original completion of Puccini’s music.
Set around the uncompromising Princess Turandot, the story follows Prince Calaf as he accepts the challenge faced by her suitors: answer three riddles correctly or face execution. Against that public confrontation runs the more intimate story of Liù, whose devotion to Calaf provides some of the opera’s most lyrical and emotionally direct music.
The score is written on a scale that distinguishes Turandot even among Puccini’s operas. Large chorus scenes and ceremonial sequences surround the principal characters, while the individual roles demand considerable vocal range and dramatic weight.
From the three riddles to “Nessun dorma”
Much of the drama is built around the encounter between Turandot and Calaf. Their famous riddle scene forms one of the opera’s central confrontations, while Calaf’s third-act “Nessun dorma” has become one of the most widely recognised tenor arias in opera.
Liù brings a markedly different musical character to the work. Her scenes offer quieter, more vulnerable writing that contrasts with Turandot’s severity and the scale of the imperial court.
Ping, Pang and Pong add another musical dimension, moving between commentary, memory and dark humour as the consequences of Turandot’s deadly ritual unfold around them.
Claus Guth’s Vienna production
The current Wiener Staatsoper staging was created by Claus Guth and first presented at the house in December 2023. Guth moves away from treating Turandot purely as an exotic fairy tale, placing greater emphasis on the psychological forces behind the story and the rigid world surrounding its central character.
The production features sets by Etienne Pluss, costumes by Ursula Kudrna, choreography by Sommer Ulrickson, lighting by Olaf Freese and video by rocafilm.
That visual approach suits an opera driven as much by ritual and collective pressure as by the relationship between its leading characters. The result places Puccini’s large-scale musical writing within a darker theatrical setting.
Opera in the heart of Vienna
Located on the Opernring, the Wiener Staatsoper is one of the central landmarks of Vienna’s historic centre and a major international destination for opera and ballet.
Turandot is especially suited to a house of this scale. The orchestra, chorus and soloists all play substantial roles in Puccini’s score, from the opening proclamation and crowd scenes to the more intimate music of Calaf and Liù.
The opera is performed in Italian, while individual subtitle displays at the seats help audiences follow the text during the performance.
