Europe's Oldest Opera House
Commissioned by Bourbon king Charles VII and designed by Sicilian royal architect Giovanni Antonio Medrano with Angelo Carasale, the Real Teatro di San Carlo was inaugurated on 4 November 1737 — the king's name day — with Domenico Sarro's Achille in Sciro. Adjoining the Royal Palace and overlooking Piazza Trieste e Trento, it predates La Scala by 41 years and La Fenice by 55, making it the oldest continuously active opera house in Europe.
The original 184-box, six-tier auditorium held more than 3,000 spectators. After a fire in February 1816 it was rebuilt in just ten months by Antonio Niccolini, who gave it the neoclassical façade and red-and-gold interior seen today. It was the operatic home of Rossini and Donizetti as house composers, and its current capacity stands at 1,386 seats after modern safety reductions.
