Why see The Magic Flute at the Vienna State Opera
The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) is Mozart's beloved final opera, first performed in 1791 to a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. A Singspiel that weaves spoken dialogue through soaring music, it follows Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno on a fairy-tale quest through trials of fire and water — guided by the wise Sarastro and challenged by the vengeful Queen of the Night, whose coloratura aria "Der Hölle Rache" remains one of the most electrifying moments in all of opera.
The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's foremost opera houses. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse, this Renaissance Revival landmark is home to the Vienna State Opera Orchestra — drawn from the same musicians as the Vienna Philharmonic — and stages a vast repertoire across a season of some 350 performances a year. Its opulent auditorium, storied history and central location make it a cornerstone of Vienna's identity as a world capital of classical music.
What to expect
