The Marriage of Figaro Vienna Tickets 2027

Why see The Marriage of Figaro at the Vienna State Opera

The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro, K. 492) is Mozart's sparkling opera buffa in four acts, set to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte after Beaumarchais' scandalous comedy. First heard in Vienna in 1786, it unfolds across a single "mad day" in which the quick-witted Figaro and his bride Susanna outwit a philandering Count — a whirl of intrigue, disguise and mistaken identity that ranks among the wittiest and most humane comedies ever set to music. From the breathless overture to the Countess's aching "Dove sono" and the shimmering letter duet "Sull'aria", the score is one of the true cornerstones of the operatic repertoire.

The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's great opera houses. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse boulevard, this Neo-Renaissance landmark has been shaped by legendary music directors from Gustav Mahler to Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan, and its orchestra shares its musicians with the celebrated Vienna Philharmonic. Rebuilt after wartime damage and reopened in 1955, it stands at the very heart of Vienna's musical life as a symbol of the city's centuries-old operatic tradition.

What to expect

• Mozart's effervescent score, from the racing overture to soaring arias like 'Voi che sapete' and 'Deh vieni, non tardar'
• A comedy of one mad day — mischief, disguises and last-minute reconciliations in Count Almaviva's household
• Da Ponte's razor-sharp Italian libretto, sung with surtitles, balancing farce with genuine tenderness
• The sound of a world-class orchestra whose musicians also form the Vienna Philharmonic
• The unmistakable atmosphere of a grand evening at one of Europe's most storied opera houses
