Why see Salome at the Vienna State Opera
Richard Strauss's Salome is a single, unbroken act of mounting obsession — a late-Romantic score of shimmering, dissonant power set to Oscar Wilde's retelling of the biblical tale of Salome, Herod and the prophet Jokanaan. First performed in 1905, it stunned audiences with its psychological intensity and its most famous set piece, the Dance of the Seven Veils, before driving toward one of the most notorious final scenes in all of opera.
The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's foremost opera houses. Opened in 1869 as the first grand building to rise on Vienna's Ringstrasse, its Renaissance Revival halls have welcomed the greatest voices and conductors for more than 150 years, and its orchestra forms the core of the celebrated Vienna Philharmonic. Rebuilt and reopened in 1955 after wartime damage, it endures as a living landmark at the heart of the Austrian capital, staging a vast repertoire across some 300 evenings each season.
What to expect
- A gripping one-act drama performed straight through, sustaining tension from the first note to its shattering finale
- The Dance of the Seven Veils — Strauss's hypnotic orchestral centrepiece — at the dramatic heart of the evening
- A vast late-Romantic orchestra conjuring shimmering, unsettling colour beneath one of opera's most demanding title roles
- The grandeur and famed acoustics of one of Europe's most storied opera houses
- An unforgettable night of Straussian intensity in the very heart of musical Vienna
Getting to the Wiener Staatsoper
The Vienna State Opera stands at Opernring 2, on the Ringstrasse in Vienna's 1st district (Innere Stadt), Austria. It sits directly above the Karlsplatz U-Bahn interchange (lines U1, U2 and U4) and is served by the Wien Oper stop, where trams 1, 2, 71, D and the 2A and 59A buses call alongside the house. It is a short walk from both Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz, and roughly 20 minutes from Vienna International Airport via the City Airport Train (CAT) to Wien Mitte, then U-Bahn.
