Raskatov's Acclaimed Orwell Opera
About the Event
Animal Farm Opera Tickets — Raskatov's Orwell Opera at the Vienna State Opera
One of the most talked-about new operas of recent years: Alexander Raskatov's powerful adaptation of George Orwell's political allegory, directed by Damiano Michieletto — who sets the action not on a farm but in a slaughterhouse, amplifying the horror of the animals' descent from revolutionary idealism to totalitarian nightmare. Alexander Soddy conducts. Stage design by Paolo Fantin, costumes by Klaus Bruns.
First performed at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam (2023), the opera features no fewer than 21 solo roles, each with a distinctive musical profile. Wolfgang Bankl is a chilling Napoleon, Michael Gniffke sings Snowball, Andrei Popov is the manipulative Squealer, and Stefan Astakhov is the tragic horse Boxer. Raskatov's inventive score ranges from the rousing anthem Beasts of England to moments of devastating pathos. A must-see for anyone who believes opera should speak to the present.
