Asmik Grigorian as Tatjana — Tchaikovsky's Most Beloved Opera
About the Event
Eugen Onegin Opera Tickets — Tchaikovsky at the Vienna State Opera
The extraordinary Asmik Grigorian — the most electrifying soprano of her generation, whose Salzburg Salome became an instant legend — stars as Tatjana in Dmitri Tcherniakov's fascinatingly detailed production. Timur Zangiev conducts, with Boris Pinkhasovich as Onegin and Bogdan Volkov as Lenski. Tcherniakov's staging centres on an enormous table that unites and separates the characters — capturing the emotions of the heart as precisely as the mechanisms of Russian society.
Tchaikovsky's most beloved opera is an intimate drama of missed opportunities and irreversible choices. The Letter Scene — in which the young, bookish Tatjana pours out her heart to the sophisticated Onegin, only to be coldly rejected — is one of the most psychologically truthful moments in all opera. Years later, when Onegin realises what he has lost, it is too late. Music of overwhelming beauty and emotional honesty from first note to last.
