Why see Fidelio at the Vienna State Opera

Fidelio is Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera, a towering drama of courage, marital devotion and the triumph of freedom over tyranny. When the noblewoman Leonore disguises herself as a young prison guard named “Fidelio” to free her wrongly imprisoned husband Florestan, Beethoven turns a rescue story into a hymn to liberty and human love. First staged in Vienna in 1805 and reaching its definitive form in 1814, the work is famous for its surging overture, the luminous “Prisoners' Chorus,” and a finale of symphonic power found nowhere else in opera.

The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's foremost opera houses and a defining landmark of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Opened in 1869 in grand Renaissance Revival style, it was rebuilt after wartime destruction and reopened in 1955 — fittingly, with a performance of Fidelio. Home to a celebrated ensemble and an orchestra drawn from the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic, and host each season to the legendary Opera Ball, the house pairs a storied repertory tradition with the unmistakable atmosphere of imperial Vienna.

What to expect

  • Beethoven's only opera in full symphonic glory — from the taut overture to a blazing, chorus-driven Act II finale
  • The unforgettable "Prisoners' Chorus" (O welche Lust) as captives step into the light
  • A gripping story of devotion and defiance: Leonore in disguise, risking everything to free Florestan
  • The grandeur of the Ringstrasse opera house and the atmosphere of a great Viennese musical evening
  • German-language Singspiel performed by the Vienna State Opera's acclaimed ensemble and orchestra
