Why see La Bohème at the Vienna State Opera
Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème is one of the most beloved operas ever written â a four-act drama first staged in Turin in 1896, with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa after Henri Murger's Scènes de la vie de bohème. It follows a circle of young Parisian bohemians, and above all the poet Rodolfo and the fragile seamstress MimĂŹ, whose romance blossoms in the famous aria âChe gelida maninaâ before tenderness turns to tragedy. Puccini's warm, melodic score has made it a cornerstone of the international repertoire.
The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's foremost opera houses. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse and rebuilt after wartime damage to reopen in 1955, the neo-Renaissance landmark presents around 350 performances a season and is closely tied to the musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic. Staging La Bohème here places the work in one of the great temples of European musical life.
What to expect
- Puccini's lush, soaring score, from the tender "Che gelida manina" to the heartbreaking final act
- The bittersweet love story of the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress MimĂŹ, set among the artists and dreamers of 1830s Paris
- A full orchestra and chorus performing one of the world's best-loved operas in a house renowned for its acoustics
