Mozart's Heroic Opera Seria — Kasper Holten's Acclaimed Production
About the Event
Idomeneo — Mozart at the Vienna State Opera
Mozart's first great operatic masterpiece returns in Kasper Holten's acclaimed production, which explores themes of power, sacrifice, and the emotional cost of leadership. Bertrand de Billy conducts a cast led by Bernard Richter as the tormented King Idomeneo, the exceptional mezzo Kate Lindsey as Idamante, and Eleonora Buratto as the fearsome Elettra.
Idomeneo, rè di Creta (1781) is Mozart's most ambitious opera seria — a work of extraordinary orchestral power and vocal beauty that the 25-year-old composer wrote for Munich. The music ranges from Elettra's furious coloratura storms to Ilia's tender arias and the magnificent Act III quartet, which Mozart himself considered one of his finest achievements. Danish director Holten, who made his Vienna debut with this production in 2014, focuses on the psychological complexity of characters trapped between duty and desire.
