Otto Schenk's picture-postcard production of Donizetti's most irresistible comedy has been a Vienna institution since 1980 — and it remains as fresh and funny as ever, with Jürgen Rose's sun-drenched Italian village sets. Two stellar casts bring this beloved opera to life across the season.

In January–February, Maria Nazarova stars as Adina with Edgardo Rocha as the lovesick Nemorino, conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi. Then in May, an all-star cast takes over: Pretty Yende as Adina, the phenomenal Michael Spyres as Nemorino, the great Ambrogio Maestri as the charlatan Dr. Dulcamara, conducted by Gianluca Capuano. The tenor's famous aria Una furtiva lagrima is one of the most beloved melodies in all of opera — the aria that made Pavarotti a household name.
