Otto Schenk's picture-postcard production of Donizetti's most irresistible comedy has been a Vienna institution since 1980 — and it remains as fresh and funny as ever, with Jürgen Rose's sun-drenched Italian village sets. Two stellar casts bring this beloved opera to life across the season.

In January–February, Emily Pogorelc stars as Adina with Bogdan Volkov as the lovesick Nemorino, conducted by Leonardo Sini. Then in May, an all-star cast takes over: Pretty Yende as Adina, the phenomenal Xabier Anduaga as Nemorino, the great Ambrogio Maestri as the charlatan Dr. Dulcamara, conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa. The tenor's famous aria Una furtiva lagrima is one of the most beloved melodies in all of opera — the aria that made Pavarotti a household name.
