Kenneth MacMillan's Ballet — Vienna State Opera 2026
About the Event
Manon — Kenneth MacMillan's Ballet at the Vienna State Opera
The Vienna State Ballet presents Kenneth MacMillan's magnificent Manon, one of the greatest full-length ballets of the twentieth century. Set to the music of Jules Massenet (arranged by Martin Yates), this deeply romantic and dramatically powerful ballet tells the story of the beautiful Manon Lescaut, a young woman torn between true love and the seductive allure of wealth and luxury in eighteenth-century Paris.
MacMillan's choreography is renowned for its extraordinary pas de deux — among the most passionate and technically demanding in the entire ballet repertoire. The bedroom pas de deux and the devastating final scene in the Louisiana swamp are moments of heartbreaking theatrical intensity that have moved audiences around the world since the ballet's creation for the Royal Ballet in 1974.
