Ludovic Tézier — Peter Stein's Masterful Verdi Production
About the Event
Simon Boccanegra — Ludovic Tézier at the Vienna State Opera
The great French baritone Ludovic Tézier — widely considered the finest Verdi baritone in the world today — stars as the tormented Doge of Genoa in Peter Stein's masterful production, with sets by Stefan Mayer and costumes by Moidele Bickel. Marco Armiliato conducts, with Joshua Guerrero as Gabriele Adorno and Federica Lombardi as Amelia.
Simon Boccanegra (revised 1881, with Boito's libretto reworking) is late Verdi at his most politically complex and psychologically penetrating — a dark meditation on power, revenge, and the impossibility of reconciling public duty with private love. The magnificent Council Chamber scene, Boccanegra's great cry for peace, and the devastating father-daughter recognition scene are among the most thrilling moments in all of Italian opera. A connoisseur's opera, performed at the highest level.
