Tosca Vienne Tickets 2027

Why see Tosca at the Vienna State Opera

Giacomo Puccini's Tosca is one of opera's most gripping dramas: a political thriller set in Rome in June 1800, where the fiery singer Floria Tosca, the painter and revolutionary Mario Cavaradossi, and the ruthless police chief Baron Scarpia are drawn into a single night of passion, torture and betrayal. Premiered in 1900 and based on Victorien Sardou's play, the score blazes with some of the repertoire's most celebrated moments, including Tosca's heartbreaking “Vissi d'arte” and Cavaradossi's “E lucevan le stelle”.

The work is staged at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), a landmark of Vienna's grand Ringstrasse. Opened in 1869 and rebuilt after the Second World War, this neo-Renaissance house is among the busiest and most revered opera stages in the world, presenting a vast repertoire each season with an orchestra drawn from the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic. To hear Puccini here, in a city synonymous with music, is opera at its most electric.

What to expect

• Puccini's soaring score performed live, from the thunderous Act I “Te Deum” to the aching intimacy of “Vissi d'arte”
• A taut three-act thriller of love, jealousy and sacrifice, set against the real churches and fortresses of 1800s Rome
• The grandeur and celebrated acoustics of one of Europe's great opera houses on the Vienna Ringstrasse
• A world-class orchestra and cast in the heart of Vienna's living musical tradition
• An unforgettable evening in a building that is itself a monument to Viennese culture

Getting to the Wiener Staatsoper
