La Fenice, the opera house that keeps rising from its ashes

Teatro La Fenice opened on 16 May 1792 to a design by Gianantonio Selva, commissioned by Venetian families who had lost their previous theatre to fire — hence the name, "the phoenix". The omen proved accurate twice: the hall burned in 1836 and again in January 1996, when arson left only the outer walls standing. Rebuilt to a plan by Aldo Rossi on the principle of "as it was, where it was", it reopened on 14 December 2003 with a seating capacity of around 1,000.

The theatre's history runs through the core of Italian opera: Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti wrote for it, and Verdi premiered Rigoletto (1851) and La traviata (1853) here. Today it carries the opera, ballet and symphonic seasons of the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice.

Inside the hall: stalls, boxes and gallery

The auditorium is a classic Italian horseshoe. The platea (stalls) sits under five tiers of boxes (palchi), with gallery seating at the top. Central boxes and the stalls give the most complete view of the stage; side boxes close to the proscenium trade sightlines for proximity, so check the seat position when comparing categories.

Getting there

La Fenice stands on Campo San Fantin, in the San Marco district. There is no vehicle access anywhere in central Venice: take vaporetto Line 1 to Santa Maria del Giglio or Sant'Angelo, or Lines 1 or 2 to Rialto or San Marco, then walk a few minutes through the lanes. From Piazza San Marco the theatre is roughly a five-minute walk — allow extra time, as the route is easy to lose.

FAQ

Is there a dress code? There is no formal requirement for most performances; smart casual is the norm, with audiences dressing up more for premieres and gala evenings.

How big is the theatre? The rebuilt hall seats around 1,000 across stalls, five tiers of boxes and the upper gallery — an intimate space by opera-house standards, so most seats are close to the stage.

Can the theatre be visited outside performances? Yes, La Fenice runs daytime visits with audio guide when the stage schedule allows; evening performances remain the way to see the hall in use.
