Teatro Regio Torino, a Savoy court theatre with a modernist heart
The Regio's origins date to 1740, when it opened as the opera house of the Savoy court to a design by Benedetto Alfieri, a five-tier Italian theatre of about 2,500 places that drew the Grand Tour to Turin. After nearly two centuries of activity, a fire destroyed the hall on the night of 8–9 February 1936, sparing the facade.
Reconstruction was finally entrusted to architect Carlo Mollino with engineer Marcello Zavelani Rossi, and the new Regio was inaugurated on 10 April 1973 with Verdi's I vespri siciliani, staged by Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano. Behind the original 18th-century facade sits one of Italy's most distinctive modern auditoriums: an elliptical hall seating 1,750, wrapped by 37 boxes, famous for its cascading "stalactite" lighting. The Regio's opera and ballet seasons run here alongside concerts.
Seating
Most of the capacity is a single raked orchestra level — unusual for an Italian opera house — giving direct sightlines from almost every seat, with the 37 boxes around the perimeter. Categories are set by row depth and centrality rather than by tier, so mid-stalls seats are the reference point when comparing prices.
Getting there
The theatre faces Piazza Castello, at the centre of Turin's grid. From Porta Nuova station it is a 15–20 minute walk up Via Roma, or a short tram or bus ride to Piazza Castello; from Porta Susa, metro line 1 plus a walk, or surface lines toward the centre. The square is a limited-traffic zone, so arriving by public transport or on foot is simplest.
