Why see La Traviata at the Vienna State Opera
Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata is one of the most beloved operas ever written — a sweeping Parisian tragedy of love and sacrifice. First staged in 1853 and drawn from Alexandre Dumas fils' La Dame aux camélias, it follows Violetta Valéry, a celebrated courtesan who gives up everything for love. Her Act 1 aria Sempre libera — a dizzying declaration of freedom before fate closes in — remains one of opera's most thrilling moments.
The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's leading opera houses. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse, the neo-Renaissance landmark sits at the heart of the city's musical life, closely tied to the Vienna Philharmonic and staging around 350 performances each season. Rebuilt after wartime damage and reopened in 1955, it endures as a cornerstone of Vienna's identity as the capital of classical music.
What to expect
- Verdi's lush, melody-rich score performed in one of the world's foremost opera houses, synonymous with the Viennese musical tradition
- The famous Act 1 aria 'Sempre libera', as Violetta wavers between a life of pleasure and the pull of true love
- A Parisian tragedy of passion, sacrifice and heartbreak that builds to a devastating finale
- The grandeur of the neo-Renaissance auditorium on Vienna's Ringstrasse and the atmosphere of a historic house
- Live orchestra and chorus bringing Verdi's sweeping, emotional music to life

From Vienna International Airport (VIE), the City Airport Train (CAT) and S-Bahn reach Wien Mitte in roughly 15–25 minutes, with an easy connection onward to the opera house.
La Traviata — Verdi at the Vienna State Opera
Simon Stone's visually stunning modern production reimagines Verdi's most popular opera for the Instagram age: Violetta is a glamorous influencer with millions of followers, her own perfume line, and a secret illness. Bob Cousins' sleek stage design and Zakk Hein's lavish video projections create a world of Parisian glitz and glamour that makes the tragedy hit even harder. A co-production with the Opéra national de Paris.
Federica Lombardi — fresh from her triumph as Manon — stars as Violetta, with the rising Spanish tenor Xabier Anduaga as Alfredo and Ludovic Tézier as Giorgio Germont. Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts. Verdi's La Traviata features some of the most famous music in all opera: the "Brindisi" drinking song, Violetta's blazing Sempre libera, and the devastating Act III farewell Addio del passato. The most performed opera in the world — and unmissable in this production.
