Why see The Marriage of Figaro at the Vienna State Opera

The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro, K. 492) is Mozart's sparkling opera buffa in four acts, set to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte after Beaumarchais' scandalous comedy. First heard in Vienna in 1786, it unfolds across a single "mad day" in which the quick-witted Figaro and his bride Susanna outwit a philandering Count — a whirl of intrigue, disguise and mistaken identity that ranks among the wittiest and most humane comedies ever set to music. From the breathless overture to the Countess's aching "Dove sono" and the shimmering letter duet "Sull'aria", the score is one of the true cornerstones of the operatic repertoire.

The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the world's great opera houses. Opened in 1869 on Vienna's grand Ringstrasse boulevard, this Neo-Renaissance landmark has been shaped by legendary music directors from Gustav Mahler to Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan, and its orchestra shares its musicians with the celebrated Vienna Philharmonic. Rebuilt after wartime damage and reopened in 1955, it stands at the very heart of Vienna's musical life as a symbol of the city's centuries-old operatic tradition.

What to expect

  • Mozart's effervescent score, from the racing overture to soaring arias like 'Voi che sapete' and 'Deh vieni, non tardar'
  • A comedy of one mad day — mischief, disguises and last-minute reconciliations in Count Almaviva's household
  • Da Ponte's razor-sharp Italian libretto, sung with surtitles, balancing farce with genuine tenderness
  • The sound of a world-class orchestra whose musicians also form the Vienna Philharmonic
  • The unmistakable atmosphere of a grand evening at one of Europe's most storied opera houses

Getting to the Wiener Staatsoper

The Wiener Staatsoper stands at Opernring 2 in Vienna's 1st district (Innere Stadt), on the Ringstrasse beside Karlsplatz. It is one of the easiest venues in the city to reach. The Karlsplatz U-Bahn station (lines U1, U2 and U4) is a short walk away, and trams 1, 2, 71 and D, along with the Badner Bahn, stop at Oper/Karlsplatz right outside. From Vienna International Airport, the City Airport Train (CAT) and the S7 S-Bahn reach the centre in roughly 15-25 minutes, from where the opera house is only a few minutes by U-Bahn or on foot through the historic old town.

Le nozze di Figaro — Mozart at the Vienna State Opera

Barrie Kosky’s production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro is on stage at the Vienna State Opera, with sets by Rufus Didwiszus, costumes by Victoria Behr and lighting by Franck Evin. Axel Kober conducts, with Andrzej Filończyk as Count Almaviva, Pretty Yende as the Countess, Kathrin Zukowski as Susanna and Peter Kellner as Figaro.

Widely regarded as the greatest opera ever composed, Le nozze di Figaro (1786) is Mozart and Da Ponte's revolutionary comedy of love, class, and forgiveness — a "crazy day" in which servants outwit their master, a Countess mourns her fading love, and a page discovers desire for the first time. From Figaro's defiant Se vuol ballare to the Countess's sublime Dove sono and the miraculous final scene of forgiveness, every moment is musical perfection.
