Why see Tosca at the Vienna State Opera
Giacomo Puccini's Tosca is one of opera's most gripping dramas: a political thriller set in Rome in June 1800, where the fiery singer Floria Tosca, the painter and revolutionary Mario Cavaradossi, and the ruthless police chief Baron Scarpia are drawn into a single night of passion, torture and betrayal. Premiered in 1900 and based on Victorien Sardou's play, the score blazes with some of the repertoire's most celebrated moments, including Tosca's heartbreaking âVissi d'arteâ and Cavaradossi's âE lucevan le stelleâ.
The work is staged at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), a landmark of Vienna's grand Ringstrasse. Opened in 1869 and rebuilt after the Second World War, this neo-Renaissance house is among the busiest and most revered opera stages in the world, presenting a vast repertoire each season with an orchestra drawn from the ranks of the Vienna Philharmonic. To hear Puccini here, in a city synonymous with music, is opera at its most electric.
What to expect
- Puccini's soaring score performed live, from the thunderous Act I âTe Deumâ to the aching intimacy of âVissi d'arteâ
- A taut three-act thriller of love, jealousy and sacrifice, set against the real churches and fortresses of 1800s Rome
- The grandeur and celebrated acoustics of one of Europe's great opera houses on the Vienna Ringstrasse
- A world-class orchestra and cast in the heart of Vienna's living musical tradition
- An unforgettable evening in a building that is itself a monument to Viennese culture
Getting to the Wiener Staatsoper
The Wiener Staatsoper sits on the Ringstrasse at Opernring 2, in Vienna's 1st district (Innere Stadt), moments from the historic city centre. It is one of the easiest venues in the city to reach: the Karlsplatz U-Bahn station (lines U1, U2 and U4) is a short walk away, and the Oper/Karlsplatz stop is served by tram lines 1, 2, 71, 62 and D, along with numerous city buses. Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna's main railway station) is only a few minutes away by U-Bahn or tram, and Vienna International Airport connects to the centre via the City Airport Train (CAT) and the S-Bahn.
Tosca Opera Tickets â Aleksandra Kurzak and Roberto Alagna at the Vienna State Opera
Aleksandra Kurzak sings Floria Tosca, with Roberto Alagna as Cavaradossi, in Margarethe Wallmann's legendary production â the oldest staging still in the repertoire of the Vienna State Opera, premiering in 1958 and beloved by audiences for nearly seven decades. With Nicola Benois' atmospheric sets and costumes, this is Tosca as it was meant to be seen: grand, theatrical, and visually magnificent.
Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts, with Amartuvshin Enkhbat as the terrifying Baron Scarpia. Puccini's Tosca is opera's greatest thriller â a relentless three-act drama of love, political tyranny, and religious hypocrisy set in Napoleonic Rome. Three of the most famous arias in the repertoire â the thunderous Te Deum, Tosca's anguished Vissi d'arte, and Cavaradossi's farewell E lucevan le stelle â build to one of the most shocking endings in all of opera.
